During excitation at the preferred orientation in vertically selective OSGCs, it was found that there is temporary NMDA receptor activity, sustained AMPA/kainate activity, and sustained disinhibtion (reduced glycinergic input). At the null orientation it was observed that the NMDA receptor activity and the inhbitory components were suppressed. The timing and amplitude of the excitatory and inhibitory responses recorded remained the same. This may suggest that NMDA receptor activity is not responsible for orientation selectivity.[1]
