Antibodies against choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), the acetylcholine biosynthetic enzyme, are useful in staining amacrine cells in the retina, as it has been thought for some time that amacrine cells are the only cholinergic retinal neurons. However, at least one study has shown that there may exist cholinergic ganglion cells through staining against an alternative splice variant of ChAT mRNA in rat retina.[1]
